Receives Unanimous Approval at Mississauga City Council

The Canadian Urban Institute has developed a ‘how to’ guidebook that can be used by municipalities in Ontario to measure and evaluate the outcomes of municipal cultural planning (MCP) in their communities.  The guidebook contains  a framework for measuring MCP that examines:

The Evolution of Planning

Glenn Miller, VP of Education and Research at the CUI, attended the annual OPPI symposium to find out what's changed in the profession over the last 25 years. He reports back from Ottawa that the scope of planning has expanded beyond recognition. Download the PDF of the ReNew Canada article for the full story.

Now Open! Nominations for the 2012 Urban Leadership Awards

The Urban Leadership Awards (ULA) program is an annual initiative of the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) designed to recognize those who have made significant contributions to improving the quality of life in Canada’s cities and urban regions.

ULA recipients define the very nature of “leadership” and can be organizations, groups or individuals who demonstrate a calling and a vision, tenacity, creativity, energy and drive. These characteristics combined with the ability to engage others, are what distinguish ULA recipients from the mainstream.

The awards program is also a fundraiser for the Institute in support of our internship program, dedicated to providing undergraduate and graduate scholars with practical work experience. This year the awards will take place on June 8th at the Toronto Board of Trade.

If you know an individual or group who deserves to be recognized for their contribution to city-building, download and complete an application for the 2012 awards -- the deadline is March 2nd, 2012. For more information about the categories and criteria, please visit the Awards page here.

The French version is now available for a recent CUI Report that finds that age friendly communities are growing in popularity, but that the concept is not yet a priority for municipal planning departments.

The Age Friendly Communities (AFC) initiative was introduced in Canada in 2007 on a pilot basis following cooperation between the Public Health Agency of Canada and the World Health Organization.  The goal of AFC is to make the built environment more accessible for older adults and to modify services to better meet the needs of seniors.
